Private wood-and-canvas canoe-building instruction
Arrange a hands-on wooden canoe build with its maker
Northwoods Canoe Company / Rollin Thurlow
Rollin Thurlow’s Northwoods Canoe Company expressly offers private canoe-building classes at its Atkinson shop. The experience involves constructing a selected wood-and-canvas design alongside the maker, rather than assembling ordinary decorative woodcraft. The owned menu describes a standard ten-day arrangement and a shorter option involving more staff preparation. A matching authorized VAWAA listing also offers individualized canoe-building instruction.
Current location note / listed area: Atkinson, Maine; privately arranged workshop instruction, not a paddling charter
The current website states a 24-month waiting list for new canoes and restorations; inquire whether and when a private class can be accepted. Owned classes exclude June–August and normally limit instruction to two students, while the platform lists additional guests differently. Confirm participants, current teacher, model, preparation, materials, tool roles, duration, transport, access and insurance/waiver requirements. Lodging is separate. Final painting/varnishing and curing occur after the build; no immediately launchable, seaworthy or completed-on-date outcome is guaranteed here. Older staff copy and historical project examples are not current availability. No wedding, boat ride or guest-controlled machinery package is offered.
